You’re Not Charlie and Neither Am I.

A picture isn’t worth a thousand words – not this time… Maybe never again for me. How do I show that we’re all complicit? How do I simultaneously say “Je suis Charlie!” and that I want nothing to do with them?! How was I going to respond visually to a few hundred years of systemic Western dominance whose capital-based projects have funnelled wealth, people and resources in one direction at the expense of nearly an entire planet? Whoops! Did you think this was about free speech or freedom or religion? Keep your eye on the prize.

Gold! Alberta Magazine Awards

A little while ago I received the delightful news that my illustration Alberta Oil magazine won Gold in the Illustration category in the 2013 Alberta Magazine Awards.

Interview with Magenta Manor

I recently had the fortune to be interviewed by the fine folks at MagentaManor.com, where I was allowed to prattle & expound on teaching, career evolution, the validity of awards & other possible foot-in-mouth worthy subjects!

Strength Through Design!

Sometimes you just have to freak out a little when an art-director/designer makes your illustration look like it’s made of gold, which is what happened in this weekend’s Focus section in the Globe & Mail.

AMA Nomination

I just happily learned that I’m a finalist in the the 2013 Alberta Magazine Awards in 14 Showcase. Thanks to the kind folks at Alberta Oil magazine & their fantastic art-direction! Last year I managed to score ‘Best Illustration’ (2012) for another illustration for Alberta Oil — the Great Horse Race — shown below as well.

New Prints Are Up!

Slowly but surely more & more prints are making it up on my Etsy store. Head on over to the shop & have a look. Of course, if you’re interested in a piece that’s on my site but not the Etsy store, toss me an email & I’ll get it up in all haste.

Best Illustration at the AMA!

Last night while enjoying an unseasonably warm evening & eating gelato I received an exciting — I’d won ‘Best Illustration’ for ‘Due Diligence’ at the Alberta Magazine Awards. The illustration was originally created for the fine people at Alberta Oil Magazine. Woot!

Applied Arts Award!

I just got a spot of good news — a few of my favourite illustrations from this year will be in the 2012 Applied Arts Photography & Illustration Awards. A series of 3 book reviews for the Globe & Mail with the ever great to work with David Woodside made the cut as did a fun illo of a horse race for Alberta Oil magazine with Andrew Forbes.

Icon, I Did!

As a break from updates & general busy work, I thought I’d toss together a possible cover, but using a book of fiction: Roddy Doyle’s ‘Bullfighting’. The drawing within was originally done for the Globe & Mail’s book review of the same novel. I like the almost 60/70s-style feel that this series has, & wanted to give it a go.

TED Talk Tuesdays #1

Something I’ve always enjoyed & wanted to do, is share some favourite TED talks. Since discovering them 5-6 years ago (?), they’ve become a regular staple in my surfing, reading, inspirational digging habit. With a deep love of science, tech, cognition & ‘big picture’ thought, TED immediately had me hooked & slack-jawed.

Scholastically Inclined

Aside from feeling like I’m staring down a shotgun barrel with a train of molten lead ripping forward with all the prep & presentations, methinks this semester’s going to be interesting. Even in my short time teaching, it’s been both energizing & impressive watching a student get excited &/or grasp a concept for the first time & seeing that ‘click’…

I just tossed up another sneak-peek of new work on Dribble. If you’ve not had had a chance to check out the site, you can head over there & hit ‘follow’ to see snippets of illos a little early.

Have a look! dribbble.com/dushan

Nice Face!

It’s been a good while since I’ve had a pile of portraits to do, but there are 2 projects that are now on the go that will fill that space in spades! All in all, over the next 2-3 months, there should be a trickling of 30+ portraits flying off the page… 9 of which will be of influential Canadians & the remaining 20+ will all be rock’n’roll!
